Key Takeaways

Here are some of the key lessons shared in the webinar and important takeaways.

  • Tourism relies on nature’s resources and ecosystems, for various systems within destinations, for tourist activities, and many goods and services that are needed for them. That’s why tourism’s direct and indirect relationships with nature is an essential part of sustainable management of destinations.
  • Tourism has important opportunities to become part of a nature-positive economy, supporting local and global goals for restoring ecosystems, supporting wildlife habitats, preventing biodiversity decline, and even positively contributing to a more regenerative future of our regions.
  • Policy solutions and destination practices that support nature-positive outcomes include:
    • Financing environmental protection and channeling resources through mechanisms such as parks and protected areas.
    • Creating opportunities for local stakeholders as well as visitors to connect with nature, encouraging them to become advocates for biodiversity conservation.
    • Engaging travelers and the general public through education on species protection and responsible business practices.
    • Supporting and directly investing in local projects that help restore ecosystems and strengthen carbon storage capacities.
  • Destinations also need long-term transformative actions to promote systems-wide change for valuing nature and measuring progress beyond the existing metrics addressing the status quo.
