Watch the webinar! Webinar #1 | 09 April 2025 | What Makes a DMO Effective in Sustainable Destination Management? Destination Stewardship for Sustainable Tourism: Insights and Lessons on Sustainable Destination Management As part of the WeNaTour webinar series, the first session titled “What makes a DMO effective in sustainable destination management? ” was delivered on April 9th, featuring presentations on key roles and responsibilities of destination management organisations (DMOs), effective approaches to engaging and collaborating with destination stakeholders, and a real-life destination example of implementing the destination management and stewardship approach.  Key Takeaways Here are some of the key lessons shared in the webinar and important takeaways. There can be many different forms of a management entity in terms of its structure, make-up and organisational type. Importantly, though, all effective destination management organisations should have capacities for executing key responsibilities such as: Strategic planning to develop and implement the sustainable tourism development and management framework. Inclusive stakeholder engagement based on a clear vision representing shared goals and values of the community. Responsible development and marketing of local experiences that reflect the local sense of place and support local well-being. When establishing participatory experiences for stakeholders, focus on being an effective facilitator who assists in the design, journey and guiding of the collaborative process of co-creating solutions, rather than just disseminating information or offering one-way communication. Today’s (and tomorrow’s) DMOs, navigating the unique challenges of a VUCA (Volatile Uncertain Complex Ambiguous) world, need skills for smart stewardship, which not only requires a balanced approach... --- ### Chia-Lin Huang > is part of the WeNaTour Alliance! There is no better place to reconnect and centre than in nature. Discover how mindfulness can elevate your outdoor experiences and become a valuable tool for nature guides. Discover mindful tourism and explore its benefits in this article. What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is a form of ‘meditation’ where your focus is on being aware of what you are sensing and feeling in a specific moment without judgement or trying to fully understand it. When we are immersed in nature, and allow ourselves to disconnect from all the noise and fast paced technology we are surrounded by, it provides us with the perfect opportunity to ground without necessarily being aware of the process we are in. Why Mindfulness is this becoming so important? People are constantly being bombarded and distracted by social media, digital communication and always being connected. Post-pandemic interest in reconnecting in nature continues to grow as health and wellness travel sector continues to grow, but so has the interest in nature. On many occasions while spending time in nature we stop to capture magical moments like watching the sunset or listen to a bird call, and continue on without giving it a second thought... is this not the perfect moment for... --- ### Museo Santa Maria della Scala > is part of the WeNaTour Alliance! Get inspired with our selection of four exemplary destinations case studies in Europe! As part of our commitment to promoting sustainable tourism across Europe, our partner Etifor | Valuing nature has selected four exemplary tourism destinations, each recognized for their sustainable practices. The destinations, selected for their commitment to sustainable tourism, include Valsugana Lagorai in Italy, Nassfeld Lesachtal Weissensee in Austria, the city of Siena in Italy, and Colinele Transilvaniei in România. The case studies showcase Destination Management as an approach that allows for the sustainable management of the complexity inherent in the tourism system. In this context, we look at the certification as a useful tool that can support destinations and tourism operators in contributing to a management of the tourism phenomenon which is systemic, organised, focused and capable of guaranteeing long-lasting sustainable development. These case studies aim at showing how the destination management approach has been an activator of innovation in destinations through the certification tool and in terms of specific Key Aspects, namely: KA1: Governance structure KA2: Management and funding KA3: Stakeholder engagement KA4: Monitoring and assessment KA6: Socio-cultural valorisation Each case study is presented in a factsheet format (available in different languages), offering insights into its approach to sustainable tourism destination management and practices. We are thrilled to announce that on April 23rd WeNaTour was showcased in the prestigious GSTC Academic Symposium in front of an audience specialized in sustainable tourism. The project was presented by our partner, Etifor, highlighting its origins, the challenges it addresses, its ambitious goals and achievements, and the synergies between WeNaTour and the GSTC standard. For WeNaTour, it was an excellent opportunity to highlight the important role of appropriately trained professionals as the key to change, to make the project known at the European level and beyond, as well as to observe that there is consensus on the fact that business as usual is no longer permissible and that tourism must be seen and treated as a complex socio-cultural phenomenon that requires new tools for destination management that also involve monitoring and assessment impacts. All key assumptions on which the project is also based. The GSTC Academic Symposium was held conjunction with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council 2024 Global Conference, the most important event in the sustainable tourism field aiming to unite global and local tourism professionals engaged in advancing and advocating for sustainable travel and tourism. The event is organised by The Global Sustainable Tourism Council® (GSTC), a non-governmental organisation that establishes and manages global standards for sustainable travel and tourism. The Academic Symposium served as a collaborative platform for researchers to discuss pressing issues and share their findings on sustainable tourism. The Symposium covered a wide range of topics, reflecting the diverse nature of the tourism system,... --- ### Project Meeting in Villach > How to design an innovative training offer on sustainable tourism? How to design an innovative training offer on sustainable tourism? On March 2023, the WeNaTour project partners met for two dynamic days of updates, participatory workshops, and insightful field visits. On March 21st and 22nd, the partners of the WeNaTour project gathered for two days of updates, participatory workshops, and field visits in Villach, Austria, hosted by The Carinthia University of Applied Sciences FachhoshSchule Kaernten. Objective of the workshop: to define and organize the content of the future training modules of the study program that will shape a new professional figure, the sustainable tourism destination manager. Starting from January 2025, the WeNaTour project will develop a multidisciplinary training program on sustainable tourism destination management, targeting both students and professionals, embracing various training modalities and approaches. In addition to the group work, the two field visits were helpful in getting to know the nearby Nassfeld-Lesachtal-Weissensee (NLW) Region, an interesting case study for innovative practices in tourism and local development. We had the opportunity to learn concrete solutions and practices applied in the area of Weissensee and by the Schloss Lerchenhof. Want to know more?
